piercing aftercare

important

Most Important piercing rules -

Piercings must be kept clean. The cleaning method changes slightly depending on your piercing.

  • Piercings must be kept dry. You must not soak, submerge, or swim with a new piercing for a minimum of 4 weeks.

  • Touching must be kept to a minimum. This means no touching, twisting or turning the jewellery.

general piercing aftercare

Clean piercing twice daily with sterile saline - This can be purchased at our Studio.

We advise to use Neil Med Piercing Aftercare Wound Wash ( see image attached )

  • To clean - First, wash hands with antibacterial soap and water.

Spray a small amount of sterile saline onto both the front and back of your piercing to soak and soften crusties.

Use a piece cotton bud or folded kitchen roll to gently remove any debris.

  • Do not use any extra products, homemade remedies or chemicals.

  • Do not twist, turn or fiddle with your jewellery!

This introduces bacteria, damages the healing piercing and can extend your healing time.

  • Do not soak or submerge your piercing in the first 4 weeks.

This means you must avoid swimming, bathing in bathtubs, hot tubs, saunas etc.

  • Please follow downsize instructions and book a check-up when your piercing is 2-6 weeks old.

  • If you’re unsure or have questions at any stage, then please don’t hesitate to contact us via Instagram / Facebook.

NASAL PIERCINGS

For nasal piercings, follow the General Piercing Aftercare instructions as above to clean only the outside of your piercing.

It is not necessary to clean the jewellery on the inside of your nose unless there is a visible build up.

The inside of the nose is self-cleaning and excessive cleaning may cause irritation to the sensitive skin. Septum piercings should only be cleaned when there is visible build-up, and can for the most part be left entirely alone.

  • To clean the inside of your nasal piercing :

First, wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water. Spray a small amount of sterile saline solution onto a cotton bud or clean paper towel. Fold into a corner, and gently wipe away any build-up.

oral PIERCINGS

Clean the outside of the piercing twice daily following the General Piercing Aftercare as shown above.

  • To clean the inside of your mouth (and any inner oral piercings), use an alcohol-free mouthwash morning and night and after each main meal, for a maximum of 5 times a day.

  • Rinse your mouth out with clean water after eating, drinking, smoking or having sexual or oral contact using your mouth.

  • Avoid spicy foods and sucking on straws for a few weeks as this can exacerbate any swelling.

  • We recommend drinking plenty of cold water to help with your swelling. We do not recommend applying or sucking on ice as this can damage your tissues and cause cold burns.

surface PIERCINGS

Follow the General Piercing Aftercare as above. Take extra care to be very gentle when cleaning for the first 14 days.

  • It is recommended to wear a disposable adhesive plaster firmly over your piercing for 12 hours on, 12 hours off for the first 5-7 days to help your piercing to sit flush and avoid snags.

  • Once the piercing has settled, you may use a cotton bud to help remove large build-ups between jewellery and skin.

genital PIERCINGS

Each intimate piercing has slightly different aftercare. You will be instructed on what will be best for your piercing at your consultation.

  • Generally, you will want to follow the General Piercing Aftercare as above.

  • Use a sanitary towel/liner for the first week (you must change this a minimum of twice daily for hygiene purposes).

  • Avoid sexual contact and masturbation where possible for at least 2-4 weeks.

  • Wear a condom for sex and avoid the body fluids of others for the first 4 weeks.

  • Listen to your body. If it is uncomfortable or sore at any stage, then communicate with your partner or stop!

downsizing

Downsizing is important for a happy, healthy piercing that lasts a lifetime.

Downsizing means switching the post or ring to a shorter one to give a snug fit after swelling has gone down.

A snug, well-fitting piece of jewellery minimises the risk of snagging and pressure issues, and is much more comfortable to wear permanently. 2-6 weeks after being pierced is the average time window to downsize. Your piercer will let you know what is ideal for your piercing, as everybody is different.

A check-up 2-4 weeks after piercing is recommended even for piercings which don’t require a downsize. This helps us make sure your piercing is healing well and we can help solve any issues early on.

Check up times :

Inner Oral Piercings (Tongue, frenulum, etc.) – 7-14 days

Oral Piercings – 2-3 weeks

Ear Piercings, Body Piercings, Surface Piercings – 4-6 weeks

Healing times

The approximate healing times are a guideline for healthy piercings on most people.

Please keep in mind that your piercing may heal more quickly or take even longer.

Continue suggested aftercare for at least the amount of time listed below for your piercing.

At the end of the healing time, twice daily cleaning is no longer required, although once-a-day cleaning is still suggested.

When your piercing is healed, jewellery can safely be changed but it shouldn’t be left out for longer than it takes to switch jewellery. Even once the hole becomes permanent it can still shrink and make jewellery reinsertion more difficult, we provide a service of jewellery change for £5.

laser tattoo removal aftercare

how to take care of skin immediately after treatment

For the next few weeks while your laser removal is healing, we recommend to apply YAYO clean laser serum ( Please see image attached )

This can be purchased at our studio.

Directions to apply :

Gently apply clean laser serum to the laser treated area using a clean finger. Allow the serum to penetrate the skin naturally, do not massage in. Apply 2-3 times a day or as often as necessary to cool your skin.

Don’t apply any other creams or makeup to the treated area within the first few days.

You may also apply Vaseline, Aquaphor, or hydrocortisone cream to moisturize the area as it heals.

Vitamin E ointment is helpful too, as it helps to restore damaged skin cells.

And, you should wear sunblock (SPF 25+) any time you go outside.

Sun exposure is one of the worst things for the skin after laser removal.

can you shower after laser tattoo removal?

You can shower and wash the treatment area. However, you should avoid high-pressure water. Clean the area gently with mild soap and pat dry.

Don’t soak the area until it’s completely healed. Avoid baths, hot tubs, and swimming pools, as all of these can increase your chances for infection.

for faster healing results

  • Drink lots of water, keeping the body hydrated is key to maintaining a strong immune system. It helps flush out toxins and restore blood cells, which are key to preventing infections.

  • Decrease alcohol consumption. Too much alcohol intake can cause dehydration, which slows down the healing process. If possible, avoid alcohol entirely.

things you must avoid

Do Not Overexpose Yourself to the Sun

After laser tattoo removal treatment, you need to keep the treated area out of the sun. If you get a sunburn in between treatments, you’ll have to postpone your next session until your skin returns to its normal colour.

Delaying treatments will prolong the process and make it take longer to see permanent results, it’s not just sunburns that slow the healing process – any amount of tanning can have the same effect.

Make sure to keep your skin covered with sunscreen and clothing or bandages if you plan on spending any time in the sun

Do Not Pick Scabs or Pop Blisters

Blistering and scabbing are natural side effects of the healing process. It’s tempting to pop and pick at your skin, avoid this at all cost.

Opening the wound not only increases the risk of infection but also prolongs the healing process.

And as long as you have scabs or blisters on your skin, avoid shaving that area, using a razor can cause you to open the wound accidentally.

For the best results, allow scabs to fall off and blisters to drain on their own.

how long does it take to heal?

The total healing time after laser treatment is about 4 to 8 weeks. But, what you do during those weeks can increase or decrease the healing process.

Healing times vary depending on the type of treatment, the strength of your immune system, and how closely you follow your aftercare plan.

Your post treatment efforts are as important a part of the process as the laser itself.

Just by staying hydrated and keeping your immune system healthy, for example, you can speed up the process by several weeks, and by protecting your wound, you’ll avoid opening the scab, which helps it heal without interruption.
